The moon face of this pendant is intended to be the back side of the piece. What would a more Zen pocket watch look like? I imagine it would have a gorgeous textured front face, and on the back instead of a clock that shows seconds, minutes, and hours a reminder of the slower movements of the moon in our sky. 28 day cycle from one full moon to the next. The top bail shape reminds me of vintage clocks and as I was making this necklace an old nursery rhyme kept popping into my head. So I decided to call this the "Hickory Dickory" pendant.
Solid sterling silver, Carved bone sleeping moon cabochon. 18" wheat chain also in sterling. Finished with a swivel lobster clasp.
The textured front of this pendant I hand wove using an ancient technique attributed to the Vikings. The technique is called trichinopoly. After hand weaving a length of this which forms a hollow and flexible kind of chain, I cut open the tube, flattened it, and then soldered it onto a 20 gauge piece of flat sterling. After that, I used a disc cutter to cut an approximately 30mm circle. I took another piece of 20 gauge sterling silver sheet, and cut a second disk, punching into that an off center opening which I used to frame the textured base. That was soldered together and then I added a sterling silver bezel wire around the outside edge to form a kind of 'Coin'. I then added a second inner bezel using gallery wire to secure and frame the moon face. On top I soldered a hand forged and shaped "scroll" bail.
After sanding, polishing and setting the moon face into the backside of the pendant, I then used liver of sulfur to antique just the woven pattern in the round "window." The final step before hanging the pendant on my favorite wheat chain, I hand polished the woven area's surfaces.
All told, it took about 25 hours of painstaking hand labor to create this unique pendant.
